भुवनेश्वर –  बीजू जनता दल (बीजद) के अध्यक्ष नवीन पटनायक Naveen Patnaik ने ओडिशा में अपने 24 साल के शासन का अंत करते हुए राज्य विधानसभा चुनावों में पार्टी की हार के बाद बुधवार को मुख्यमंत्री पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया। सूत्रों ने बताया कि पटनायक ने राज भवन में राज्यपाल रघुबर दास को अपना इस्तीफा पत्र सौंपा। पटनायक के आवास पर बीजद के कई नेता एकत्रित हुए थे लेकिन वह अपना इस्तीफा देने अकेले ही राज्यपाल के आवास गए।

बीजद अध्यक्ष ने बाहर इंतजार कर रहे पत्रकारों की ओर हाथ हिलाकर उनका अभिवादन किया और अपना इस्तीफा पत्र सौंपने के बाद राज भवन से निकल गए। भारतीय जनता पार्टी (BJP) ने ओडिशा में 147 विधानसभा सीटों में से 78 सीटें जीतकर सत्ता पर कब्जा जमा लिया है जबकि बीजद केवल 51 सीटें जीत पायी। कांग्रेस ने 14 सीट और मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी (माकपा) ने एक सीट जीती है जबकि तीन निर्दलीय उम्मीदवार भी विजयी साबित हुए। नतीजों की घोषणा मंगलवार को की गयी। पटनायक ने पहली बार पांच मार्च 2000 को ओडिशा के मुख्यमंत्री पद की शपथ ली थी।
